The first painting  I did of the Millarville area was for a show in 1998. Since that time I’ve varied the format as well as the styles somewhat, a natural evolution.

Have always loved the look of trees on a hillside, and wanted to have fun with this one.  An added touch of calligrapy was the answer, something I like to do in watercolors; I wondered why I hadn’t tried it much in oils.

As the brilliant turquoise sky wasn’t showing up when I photographed this piece, I decided to paint it the colour that it really is, using photoshop. This piece was chosen for the invitation to the three person show at Stephen Lowe art gallery from April 16-23 2011-”My Favorite Places”. Please see the spring issue of Galleries West magazine for details.

Autumn is a favorite season for painting, lots of neutrals to offset the colours of the foliage.Patches of snow created  interesting patterns which I could use to lead one’s eye through the composition.

Happy to announce that Stephen Lowe Gallery in Calgary Alberta has given me an exclusive listing with them.  As of January 1 2011, the Alicat gallery in Bragg Creek will no longer be carrying my work. It was a difficult decision to leave after such a long and rewarding relationship there.

While working part-time, as a geophysical technologist, at Crestar, in the 1990′s; I would often receive the gift of a calendar, at Christmas. The artwork published in it were those of the artists represented at Stephen Lowe. I realized this when I asked if I could have a painting in the calendar the following year. The answer was simply:” No, they are Stephen Lowe’s artists”.

I don’t know whether or not the calendars are still given, but do know they inspired me to work more diligently.
